Pink Vacation Rentals attended the 26th Annual IGLTA (International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association) Global Convention in Antwerp Belgium from June 23-26, 1010 and the Gay Pride events on June 26th.

As we prepare to leave Antwerp after a great 4 day visit, we want to leave you with some information presented by the City of Antwerp:

Gay Antwerp

Welcome to Gay Antwerp.
Whilst Amsterdam continues to dominate the gay scene for many, Antwerp is fast becoming the destination of choice for the gay visitor to mainland Europe. You'll often hear the term Holebi used for the gay scene in Flanders, as the word Gay is often used exclusively to apply to gay men. With the success of the Eurogames in 2007 and last 2 years of Antwerp Pride, Antwerp council have recognised the importance of gay visitors and the gay scene in general. This has led to some new initiatives:

Antwerp Pride - A third, edition to be held this year.
The first ever Belgium Leather Pride, which Gay Antwerp is proud to be working with January 2010
Antwerp will host the IGLTA (International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association) conference in 2010
Antwerp will also host the 2013 Outgames

General Information

Antwerp (Antwerpen) is located in the Flanders region of Belgium, and is renowned as a port city. The majority language of the city is Flemish (which is a variant of Dutch), although most people you meet do speak English and/or French in addition to Vlaams. The city has good rail, air and road links with high speed trains to Paris, and Amsterdam direct from Central Station. By changing at Brussels, this extends to London, Cologne and many other destinations. As well as this, Antwerp has its' own airport, with daily flights to London City and Manchester airports. Getting around Gay Antwerp is quite easy by foot, and there are excellent (and cheap) bus and tram networks throughout the city. A tip for visitors is to buy a "Lijnkaart" for 8EUR, as this will give you at least 10 journeys (you put it in one of the yellow machines on the bus/tram when you enter). There is an hour "window" during which no further amount will be deducted from your card. The Lijnkaart is available from many newsagents and supermarkets as well as the "Lijnwinkels" located throughout the city (including one at Central Station), and also from vending machines at the "pre-metro" tram stations There is also an extensive cycle path network, pedestrians be aware that the nice red/pink pavements are cycle paths, and you should avoid walking on them! Driving in Antwerpen can be very daunting to those who are not used to it. If you are visiting from abroad, remember that you have to give way to traffic coming from the right, and that pedestrians and cyclists usually do not get a seperate "timeslot" when crossing at traffic lights (if you have a green light at crossroads, and are turning right or left, pedestrians will usually be crossing at the same time - pull away slowly and watch for pedestrians and cyclists). Parking can be difficult (and expensive - on street parking has recently gone up in price in Antwerp) to find in some areas, and it really is best to leave the car in a long term or hotel car park once you've arrived, and use public transport.

Gay Areas

Unlike many cities Antwerp doesn't have a single "Gay Village", with gay venues being spread throughout the City. One area which was previously the gay centre is around Van Schoonhovenstraat (known locally as "Rue Vaseline"), this still has a number of venues located there.

Out on the Town in Gay Antwerp During the week the scene tends to be fairly quiet (events do still exist - check the agenda for details). At the weekend, however, Gay Antwerp really erupts into action. Visitors can be easily confused, as the Belgians tend to go out alot later (often midnight or later), and continue partying until the morning. It may be a good idea to get a couple of hours sleep before going out in Gay Antwerp on a Friday or Saturday Night!

We are a new website, with a creative angle to the popular vacation rentals business. This trend started years ago and has grown in popularity with the passing of each year.

Background:

I am a licensed Real Estate broker and the owner of Rainbow Realty, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I have over 20 years as a licensed real estate professional. In addition, I own and operate a small boutique hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Over the past couple of years, business began to slow. From the calls and emails I was getting, it was clear that most people were looking for a “special deal”. Because most of my 9 units have either a kitchenette, or full kitchen, they were perfect for extended stays.

About 18 months ago, I listed several of my own properties on vacation rentals websites. I soon learned firsthand that there are a lot of consumers out there looking for this kind of travel experience. I offered a few of the larger units at Mary’s Resort to these consumers. Not only was it a success, but most of my revenue over the past 6 months has been a direct result of vacation rentals.

I didn’t have to worry about housekeeping, because with vacation rentals, it isn’t expected. Not only that, but I was charging a “departure cleaning fee” in addition to the rent. Tax and a refundable deposit were also collected.

Because these people were renting a vacation home, they would sign an Agreement and make a 50% payment with the Agreement and they pay the remainder 14-days prior to arrival. Unlike the hotel business, you get your money in advance. All of these practices are standard in the vacation rental business.

In addition to the original 2-bedroom unit at Mary’s Resort, I also started advertising a few other, smaller units. I always disclose that the unit they are renting is part of a resort. The fact that they were staying at the resort was actually a plus.

In addition to Mary’s Resort, I have 2 other properties, which I rent as vacation rentals. The income from these properties is much greater than I could expect if I were renting them on an annual basis.

After several months of renting my own vacation rentals, I noticed a void. There really isn’t a great vacation rentals website marketing to the gay (LGBT) market. Yes, there are a few websites offering gay friendly vacation rentals. None offer what Pink Vacation Rentals will.

I am expanding on the traditional Vacation Rentals business by adding hotels, where guests will rent the room or suite for a week or so, but will forgo the usual maid services, etc. These “packages” will benefit the property owners in saving of personal cost and in turn save consumers who are on a tight budget by offering them an alternative to traditional hotel stays.
